The Love Norfolk Hate Litter campaign is calling on everyone to do their bit to stop litter for a cleaner county

Whether it’s joining your local community litter pick, setting up a new group or doing a 2 minute beach clean on your next trip to the seaside, there are plenty of ways you can get involved.

The councils in Norfolk are supporting this campaign, providing materials and downloadable resources, including a poster which can be printed off and displayed and a schools pack to help teach children about the harm litter can cause.

Love Norfolk Hate Litter is the brainchild of Norfolk man Nigel Ford, who has worked tirelessly to keep our beautiful county clean and encourage others to do the same.

Case study: Litter picks in action

A photograph of Hethersett Environment Action Team, a local litter pick groupThe Hethersett Environmental Action Team, known as HEAT, have been organising local litter picks since 2001.

People of all ages get involved with the regular litter picks, and they have collected everything from sweet wrappers and plastic bottles to discarded bicycles.

“We litter pick because we take pride in our village and do our best to protect our environment,” said HEAT member Anne Edwards.

“It is also good exercise and the children really enjoy it.”

Dereham Community Litter Pick Group
After noticing a growing amount of litter in their area, Laura co-founded Dereham Community Litter Pick Group. Since their first litter pick in August 2021, they’ve grown from a team of 8 to 24!

During their picks, they’ve found many masks, cans, bottles and cigarette butts, one of the strangest finds was a can of Tango from 1988.
Dereham Community Litter Pick Group stand behind several bags of collected litter and a traffic cone.”A few of us decided to set up the group after seeing the increasing
amount of rubbish that was accumulating in our green areas
and streets, especially where our children play and our dogs
are walked. It’s also really rewarding to see the end result
of how much litter we have picked as a group in just a few hours.”

All are welcome to join, they’ve previously been joined by the
Mayor of Dereham and someone joined as part of their Duke
of Edinburgh Award. Dereham Community Litter Pick is a
friendly group of like-minded people, with many exciting events
lined up in the future such as being part of Dereham Day and
themed litter picks. To find out more search Dereham Community
