Recycling labels

Packaging and recycling labels appear on grocery items to help us identify what can be recycled or not.

Remember: not all packaging will have a recycling label but this doesn’t mean you can’t recycle it.

The main labels used on packaging

Widely Recycled Symbol

 

 

 

‘Widely recycled’ – used when 75% or more councils offer kerbside collections (for example plastic bottles).

 

 

 

 

 

‘Widely recycled at recycling points: check locally for kerbside’ – recycled in over 75% of councils.

 

 

 

Check locally recycling symbol

 

 

 

‘Check local recycling’ – used when 20% – 75% of councils offer kerbside collections.

 

 

 

Not yet recycled symbol

 

 

 

‘Not currently recycled’ – used when fewer than 20% of councils offer kerbside collections.

 

 

 

Recycle with bags at larger stores symbol

 

 

 

`Recycle with carrier bags at larger stores’  – used on certain clean plastic. These are not accepted in your Norfolk recycling bin.

Other Symbols

The following symbols can be found on different packaging, however these symbols do not necessarily mean that the items can be recycled in your local kerbside collection

 

The Green Dot:

This symbol is used mainly on packaging in European countries. It signifies that the manufacturer has made a financial contribution towards the recovery and recycling of packaging.

 

 

 

Plastic resin codes:

The numbers on plastic items found commonly in the home are an international code system for identifying the types of resin used to make many bottles and containers was introduced by the Society of the Plastics Industry. Please note: Norfolk recycling does not rely on the number on a plastic item it relies on its original purpose.
