+ What are plastic bags and wrapping?
Plastic bags and wrapping refers to the flexible plastic packaging that typically bend easily and can include bags, pouches, sachets, removable lids/liners (yoghurt pot lids) and wrappings. Plastic bags and wrapping are most commonly used to protect products such as sweets/chocolates, snack foods, frozen foods, bakery, fresh produce, meat, dairy, pet food, processed foods, cosmetics, personal care, householder detergents, beverage bottle/can wrappings.
+ Why have you introduced a plastic bags and wrapping recycling collection service?
From April 2027, local authorities will need to start collecting and recycling plastic bags and wrapping. To do this we need to explore the best way to collect this material. In Norfolk our recycling is all collected in one bin and taken to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where it is sorted into each material ready for recycling. When you add plastic bags and wrapping to this, it can make it hard to separate after collection. Collecting all the plastic bags and wrappings into one collection bag should allow us to make sure when we come to sort your recycling, it is a much more efficient process.
The trial is currently available to a small number of households for a trial period, so come April 2027 we will be ready to offer this to all households in Norfolk.
+ How long will the trial last?
The trial will begin in September 2025 and will run across three recycling collections. Specific dates for your area can be found below.
North Norfolk District Council
On Tuesday 16th September, Tuesday 30th September and Tuesday 14th October we will be accepting collection bags as part of your usual recycling collection.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council
On Wednesday 17th September, Wednesday 1st October and Wednesday 15th October we will be accepting collection bags as part of your usual recycling collection.
Breckland Council
On Thursday 25th September, Thursday 9th October and Thursday 23rd October we will be accepting collection bags as part of your usual recycling collection.
+ Why is the trial only available to a small selection of households in the area?
We are running the trial to measure the effectiveness of the collection bags. This only involves a small section of households, and we are running these trials in small areas across Norfolk. Running the trial in small areas allows for the project to collect detailed insights and gain an understanding of the best methods to collect plastic bags and wrapping from homes.
+ Are there any other local authorities that are taking part in the trial?
Small areas of Breckland Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council and North Norfolk District Council are trialling a temporary collection of plastic bags and wrappings from your home. If your area is within the trial you will have received a leaflet inviting you to take part.
+ Can I still take my plastic bags and wrapping to front of store points to recycle?
During the trial you can use the collection bag to recycle plastic bags and wrapping but also continue to take them back to store if you prefer.
+ Why do I have to put plastic bags and wrapping in the collection bag? Why can’t I just put it in my recycling bin?
The process for recycling plastic bags and wrapping is different to recycling other plastic packaging. Therefore, plastic bags and wrapping need to be grouped together so that they can be sorted effectively during the recycling process.
+ Can I put all types of plastic bags and wrapping in the recycling collection?
We accept all types of plastic bags and wrapping listed in the leaflet you have received, so long as they fit inside the collection bag. Please do not put plastic bags and wrapping loose in with your other recycling. Remember to always use your collection bag and tie it securely.
+ Why doesn’t my Council’s website show that they collect plastic bags and wrapping from my home?
Your Council’s website does not include the plastic bags and wrapping recycling collection from home because the trial is currently only available to a small selection of households. At this stage of the trial, we only want those households in the trial area to put out plastic bags and wrapping for recycling from their homes.
+ Why was my area selected for the trial?
Your area is a representative of communities across Norfolk in terms of rurality, economy, geography, and recycling services and collection methods. We are trialling the collection of plastic bags and wrapping in a variety of areas across Norfolk.
