Simpler recycling for businesses

Simpler recycling rules mean that your business must separate its waste and recycling.

Read simpler recycling guidance on GOV.UK

You must start recycling now if your business has 10 or more full-time equivalent employees.

Businesses with less than 10 full-time equivalent employees must start before 31 March 2027.

Types of businesses that the rules apply to

  • Offices. This includes libraries, museums, art, sports, and leisure facilities.
  • Hospitality. This includes food and drink businesses, holiday accommodation, cafeterias and catering providers.
  • Health and social care providers. This includes mental health services, nursing and care home providers.
  • Retailers and wholesalers. This includes both in-person and online stores.
  • Food manufacturers

What businesses need to do

Contact your current waste collection provider to arrange compliant collections.  Waste must be separated into three different bins:

  • General waste
  • Dry recycling
  • Food waste

Think about separate bins inside and outside of your business.

Remember to:

  • Ask about separate waste and recycling collections
  • Make sure your waste collection provider has a waste carriers licence
